Electric vehicles generate savings whether its a personal vehicle or one owned by a city, company, or organization. If you are in charge of fleet services, you can save money by switching from gas to electric vehicles.
Let’s look at the numbers. The price of gasoline in Ohio on September 18, 2026 was $4.47 a gallon. Nationally, it was $4.53 a gallon. In my town, electricity costs ~$15.9 cents a kilowatt hour (kWh) or ~$18.6 cents kWh depending on which public power or utility provides your electric service. A gasoline powered, Ford Transit Passenger van gets ~15 miles per gallon (mpg). In contrast, the Ford E-Transit Passenger van gets ~1.6 miles per kWh or ~54 eMPG.
At those prices of gas and electricity, it will cost you $3,576 to drive 12,000 miles in the gas van, but only $1,170 or $1,418 in the electric van. That’s a savings of $2,158 or $2,406 per year by driving electric.
With an electric van, you will also save money on maintenance. Estimated savings on maintenance are $600 to $900 per year or $3,000 to $4,500 over five years for per van. Here is information on the maintenance savings for the Ford E-transit relative to the gas powered Ford Transit van.
So when you shop for fleet vehicles, remember to consider the operating and maintenance cost. And on top of the financial savings, you also get improved air quality, less negative public health impacts, less negative environmental impacts and less negative climate impacts. Your boss or the taxpaying residents will be grateful.
