Akron Residents Ask: How Does Driving an EV Reduce the Cost of Driving?

by Joseph Ortiz | Sep 18, 2026

As I drove to the Sierra Club EV show on Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Akron, I was blown away as I watched the gas prices at a station just off the interstate roll over from $4.109 to $4.159 a gallon in the blink of an eye. Diesel was clocking in around $6.12 a gallon.

In California, I’m told that they can’t display the price of diesel correctly at some stations because it’s gone over $10.00 a gallon. The backdrop of soaring fossil fuels prices was clearly present as folks asked members of EVA of Ohio about the cost-saving benefits of alternatives to gas- and diesel-powered vehicles. The cost of electricity is about 60% less than fossil fuels.

There were around 40 EVs of every size, shape color and price point available and over 45 people who stopped by to learn about EVs and the advantage of paring your EV with solar power. Many of the drivers present noted that they regularly drive on sunshine from their solar panels or renewable electricity that they purchase through their utility. If you get your electricity from a public utility in Ohio, you can use the PUCO Energy Choice Ohio Program to buy 100% renewable electricity and save money.

What the EV show demonstrated is that we do have options to address the high cost of gasoline and diesel now. Used EVs are now comparable in price to used gasoline cars of similar age. And EV ownership translates into savings on operating costs and maintenance. At EVA of Ohio, we can answer your questions to help make the transition from fossil fuels to electric a smooth one.
